Understanding Your Net Worth
Net worth is everything you own (assets) minus everything you owe (debts). It’s the single most useful snapshot of your financial health because it accounts for both sides of the ledger — not just your savings or your income.
It depends on your age and circumstances. A common benchmark: by retirement, aim for a net worth roughly equal to 25× your annual expenses. Early in life, even a small positive net worth is meaningful progress. Don’t compare to others — compare to your past self.
Most people start adult life with student loans or car payments that exceed their savings. A negative net worth isn’t failure — it’s a starting line. Consistent saving and debt paydown moves the number in the right direction over time.
Once or twice a year is plenty. Your home value and investment accounts shift daily, but the trend over months and years is what matters. A quarterly or annual snapshot keeps you honest without obsessive tracking.
